Every list titled “the best random chat site” is really answering a different question than the one you are asking, because there is no single best one. There is a best one for what you actually want, and the useful version of this page is the one that helps you work out which that is, then tells you honestly where we fit and where we do not.

We run one of these sites, so treat the section about us with the scepticism you would bring to any of them. The parts about how to choose are true no matter which one you land on.

First, the split that decides everything: video or text

Nearly every random chat site is one of two kinds, and picking the wrong kind is why most people bounce off the first three they try.

• Video-first. This is the large, well-known part of the category, the descendants of Chatroulette and Omegle’s webcam mode: sites like Monkey, OmeTV, Emerald Chat and Chatroulette itself. If you want to see and hear the other person, this is where to look, and we are not one of them.
• Text-first. A smaller category, and the one chatsizzle is in: you type, you can send a photo, nobody is on camera. It suits people who want the conversation without the performance of being on video, who are somewhere they cannot use a camera, or who simply think faster than they talk.

Decide this before anything else. A brilliant text site is a bad video site and the reverse, and no feature list changes that.

What actually separates the good ones from the rest

Within whichever kind you picked, these are the questions worth asking of any site on any list, ours included. They are ordered by how much they matter, and they are different questions from what a single Omegle replacement has to get right because here you are comparing several at once.

1. Does it need an account? Some sites now ask for signup or keep their better half behind one. If you want to open a tab and talk, that requirement alone removes most of a list. An email is not a safety feature, it is a mailing list.
2. Is the free tier real or bait? A free tier that exists to be annoying so you pay is not a free site. Check what the paywall actually holds back before you judge one as free.

4. What happens when you report someone? The question nobody asks and the only one that predicts whether a site is still usable in a year. If reporting does nothing visible, the site is not moderated, it just has a button.

• In private chats and rooms, incoming messages in other languages are translated into your language, and the original always stays visible underneath. In Chrome and Edge this happens on your own device, and no message text leaves your browser. In other browsers, including Safari, Firefox and most phones, the message text is sent through our server to DeepL for translation, and nothing else is sent with it. You can switch incoming translation off in Preferences; the person you are talking to can still translate what you send them.

Do not pick us if you want

• Video or voice. We do not have it. It is planned, not built.
• A guarantee your photos cannot be saved. No site can give you that. Ours disappear on a timer and stamp the viewer’s name into the image, which deters a lazy re-share and prevents nothing.
• A guaranteed busy room at 4am. We are new and small, and we will not pad the count with fake users. If you need a certain conversation right now, send a friend an invite link and you land in the same chat.
• Verified ages. Ours are self-declared, 13+, and unverified, the same as every site in this category that does not put you through an ID check.

The one thing every list gets wrong

A ranking implies one site wins for everyone, and that is never true here. The best random chat site is the one that matches what you came for: video or text, account or anonymous, a specific person or a stranger. Work that out first, and most of the “best of” lists sort themselves. Then the only test that counts is trying one, which for us costs nothing and no signup.
